plant wall

148 plants, 6' X 4' of wooden frame, 12' of chicken wire, and a large box of sheet moss can create a dramatic plant wall background.

Local flowers

California dreaming

If you are on Instagram or Facebook you may have noticed a surge in the hashtags #locallygrown #americanflowers or #slowflowers. Buying local flowers not only benefits our environment but our local economy. I feel so spoiled to live in the bay area where I get to buy directly from local growers.  Here are a few flowers we get directly from our lovely flower farmers.

Pincushion proteas from Grow your own lunch. Farmer Ben is both philanthropist and agriculturalist cultivating tasty school gardens and harvesting beautiful proteas from his farm on the Carmel coast.

Among my favorite seasonal flowers, these lovely little ranunculus come from Figone farms located in Half Moon Bay.

Garden roses from Neve Brothers Farm in  Petalum, CA. Unlike most roses these beauties have a scent.

A business with a big heart

by Monica Lomas

Recently we were asked to create a special design for Mom's Tattoo Shop . On Valentine's day while everyone else is enjoying candy and flowers Mom's employees are busy creating heart tattoos for charity, Taking It to the Streets. This organization benefits homeless teens in the Haight-Ashbury area, by providing a room and a meal in exchange for cleaning up the streets.  When a business gives up a day's profit to help complete strangers, we have to take a step back and remember the good things that are happening in our communities. Thanks Mom's!

Were I got my start

by Monica Lomas

Many years ago I went to Madrid, Spain with the intent of studying dance. I was fortunate to have a friend from high school there, and I got to stay with her and her family. When I wasn't dancing I spent a lot of my free time at her family's flower shop, Yuka. It was a small space but with just enough room to create bouquets and wedding arrangements. I recently found this picture reminding me of how happy I was and what a special time that was for me. At VSF, I strive to ensure my employees are growing and learning, so they too can look back at their time here with the same fond memories.
